My name is Emily Coates, and I am thrilled to be joining the Firstlight Midwifery team. Dawn Wadleigh was my midwife, and her informative, loving and supportive care during my pregnancies inspired my journey into birth work. My husband and I live with our three daughters in the wonderful city of Tacoma. I love women, and I love the wisdom, joy and energy that come when we support one another through life. I especially love the sacred journey of pregnancy, childbirth and mothering.

Having supported many birthing families over the years, I am thrilled and grateful to be stepping into the next phase of following my passion by becoming a midwife. I am a Birth Arts International trained doula, and have worked with families throughout Pierce, Thurston and Kitsap counties. I believe that every woman should be safe, educated, loved and supported during her labor. My desire is to help women tap in to their inherent power in pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond by helping them to develop and trust their own instincts. I’m excited to grow in my ability to share knowledge, tools and resources to assist families as they walk out their journeys.

At First Light Midwifery Care our desire to take on students stems from a commitment to ensure that the art of midwifery is passed on to the younger generation and can continue to grow and thrive in Tacoma and beyond. Students are with the practice for a minimum of one year to ensure the best continuity of care possible. During their time with First Light Midwifery Care students are completing requirements put forth by the state of Washington for licensure as a licensed midwife, including many hours of prenatal and postpartum appointments, as well as 100 births prior to completing their educational program and taking the state licensing exam.
